How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

November 7, 2018

You are probably asking yourself, is there really a wrong way you to apply sunscreen? Actually, there is. Most people just grab their bottle, rub a little on their face and arms, and call it a day. The truth is, when sunscreen is not applied properly, you aren’t fully realizing its benefits, leaving your skin exposed to the harmful rays of the sun that cause damage and skins cancer. In order to fully protect your skin, you need to apply sunscreen the proper way, and more than once. To get the most out of your sunscreen, follow this simple guideline:

  • Shake your container well. It helps to mix up it all up to make sure that everything is well blended, especially when using bottled sunscreen.
  • Make sure you use enough sunscreen. It is recommended that you use about an ounce of sunscreen, which is equal to a shot glass or 2 tablespoons, to cover your entire body.
  • Use a dollop – about the size of a nickel – of that ounce just on your face. Be sure to be careful when using it around your eyes.
  • Use the rest to completely cover your arms, legs, stomach back, chest and shoulders. Don’t forget your ears and the back of your knees.
  • Be sure to apply a thick layer. If you need more than an ounce, use more! Better to use too much than too little.

Lips can get burned too, so consider using a SPF lip balm to protect them and keep them safe. If you are sensitive to the sun or burn easily, consider wearing sunglasses, a hat or even a coverup when the sun is really hot.

Another aspect of applying sunscreen well is applying it often enough. If you only apply it once, you will only be protected for a couple of hours. Below are some general rules to keep your skin safe all day long:

  • Sunscreen should be applied about 30 minutes before you go out into the sun. This gives it time to absorb and won’t wash off as easily when you perspire.
  • Remember to reapply your sunscreen about every couple of hours to keep you protected all day.
  • Reapply after swimming, or frequently when playing outdoor sports, jogging, etc.
